Theatre Initiatives

AHHAH  partners with local theaters in an effort to make theatre accessible to students and families in Coatesville. For May, we partnered with People's Light  for their production of A Single Shard. This production was the inspired adaptation by the Tony Award Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Robert Schenkkan, of Linda Sue Park's Newberry Award winning novel. This is a multicultural intergenerational powerful and uplifting coming-of-age story that follows a 12 year old homeless orphan who strives to find a better life. The themes of  identity, courage, compassion, perseverance and resiliency resonate powerfully in this story.

Students from South Brandywine Middle School said A Single Shard was "The Bomb!!!"  For many children, this was their first time seeing live theatre. Each student was given a copy of the book and attended an AHHAH workshop afterwards to connect theatre, literacy, and their imaginations.

On May 22nd, People's Light theatre held a "Relaxed Performance" of A Single Shard. This was a specially adjusted sensory-friendly performance designed to be welcoming, judgement-free, and inclusive. Children were able to make spirit animals out of clay and meet the characters afterwards! AHHAH provided free tickets to 22 people from the Coatesville community for this performance!
